Basic Wireless Router Setup

Everywhere you go your going to interact with a Computer Network. I am going to College for Computer networking and I already have some knowledge in the Networking field. So were going to discuss simple and advance networking issues within a computer network. I’m going to start off with a hooking up and the configuration of a wireless router.

Routers tend to be pretty much plug and play. To start off you plug the router into a power supply then you take an Ethernet cord and plug it into the back of the router and your computer. Some routers have a CD that you have to install to run the configuration of the router. So if the CD is needed install it by following the on screen directions. After installing the disk or if your router did not require a disk you should be at a screen that is asking you to setup a password or an ssid. An SSID is going to be the name that is given to your router on the network. At this screen your able to assign parental guidelines such as websites that are allowed to be accessed.

After choosing your specific settings you remove the Ethernet cord from the back of your computer and connect to your modem. Your modem is your source of internet wither it is from a cable company or AT&T and Verizon you still have a modem. Now that your modem is giving an internet connection to your Router you can access the internet from wireless devices such as Smart phones, laptops, tablets and many other devices. In order you connect the wireless device to the wireless router you will be required to re enter the password into the device. After that your set to browse the web whenever you want. My next blog is going to be about setting up group policies to control user Interaction. If you have a networking problem that you would like me to discuss let me know maybe you will make the list.

  1. I have a few questions:
What do I need to know when picking out a wireless router? (Or will a stork drop it on my doorstep?)Also, what's an ethernet cord look like? Does the length of it matter at all? Also, do I have to have a computer turned on to set up the wireless? And, if I have more than one computer for the wireless, do they all need to be turned on? Thanks Network Guy! Maybe there will be hope for me and technology yet!
