WEP IS NO LONGER SAFE OH NOOOOOO

Since this is our Final blog im going to discuss wireless security. Your current network is probably WEP encryption or not at all. WEP encryption is no longer safe because anyone with a knowledge of computers can download a program that allows them to hack your WEP code and then access the network. Since WEP is so easy to UN-encrypt you should use a higher level encryption.
My Home network is a TIK encryption and my password is a 32 character case sensitive including letters numbers and symbols. I have a program that test how strong your password and level of encryption is and I ran this program on my home network and in order for this program to hack my password it would have taken over 1000 years. That’s pretty good and I have run this program on WEP networks and I have received passwords to these networks in less than an hour.

So for a home network that may not be the fastest  it is a must to have a higher level encryption to keep unwanted users off the network. This will in the long run keep your network a little bit faster because there won’t be unwanted users slowing you down. Without other people on the network you will be able to use all of your bandwidth.  You don’t have to use TIK which is one of the highest level of encryption use WPK or any other levels of encryption that are higher than WEP.

Black List

This week I am going to discuss about why certain stuff is blocked at school such as Facebook, twitter, and many other websites. If you ask most people in the school there going to say that the Network Administrator likes to make us mad or that they don’t like us. Well your wrong there doing it for your own safety because when people get on Facebook they like to start problems and then it escalates to a fight or something else.  Another reason for them controlling what you look at on the internet is that there is always one kid that looks at something inappropriate and they can’t have students while under the watch of a teacher look at something inappropriate.
I would also like to talk about how they block and how they manage what websites that you can get on. Everyone here at the school has had the Blocker pop up and tell that you the website is part of the Black list. The black list is a list of websites and even key words that you aren’t allowed to look up. So you can’t look up pornographic images there trying to shape your internet experience so that you have access and more time on helpful websites. The Networking administrator would like to have Facebook unlocked but people aren’t smart while there on social websites whether there using profanity bullying someone or making fun of a teacher. So they don’t allow you on these websites to make it a non-issue.

Alright so are you still mad at the networking people  or are you mad at the previous students that caused are internet privileges to be shrunk down to the point that social media is stopped completely. So next time you see the networking guy don’t look at him and be like that the asshole that blocked Facebook just think it’s not his fault he’s following orders.

Common networking Problems

This week I left the topic open without too much direction so I am going to write about some networking issues that can happen. Such as No internet to your router, your laptop has problems connecting to internet and slow connections and some others.

First is going to be that there is not internet getting to your wireless router. There can be many answers to this once can be that your connection was disturbed for a minute and your router was unable to re connect to the internet. One way to fix this is to unplug your router and then unplug your modem for 30 seconds then plug them both back in and that should reset your connection. Another could be that your ISP (Internet service provider) is having problems and they usually restore the internet after an hour or two just how serious of a problem it is.

Another is when you choose to have your laptop connect to your wireless internet and it says that there is problems connecting to the internet. Sometimes you can fix this problem by simply turning your laptops wireless off and back on and it will fix it. It can also mean your driver is out of date or even missing. The way to fix that is to open up your control panel and go to your wireless setting and click on update driver. If your driver is missing you can go the route of doing a system reset and attempting at getting it back that way or you can look up the model of your computer go to the computer companies website and download the driver that will fix your problem.
If your reading my blog give me some stuff to write about that your having problems with maybe I can help if I  cant ill research it and help you out Thanks for reading.

Awnsering Network Questions

Last week I wrote about the setting up of a basic wireless router. There were a few questions that were brought up. So this week I’m going to answer the questions that were asked. The first question was what do you need to know when purchasing a wireless router. One this that will change the type of router and or quality is how many computers are you going to be using or weather you going to do gaming or not. So if your going to be using more than 2 wireless computers you need to get a littler bit better model that supports more Megabytes a second. If you’re an avid gamer like myself your going to need a better router even better than one that was talked about before. For gaming your price range is going to be in the 100 to 200 dollar range.

                                                                                Best Buy Routers

Here is a scenario you’re setting up your home network and you have 2 laptops and a Desktop. The routers that you going to see for sail are going to be 802.11 n you want to make sure that it is also backwards compatible so that it will work on older computers. In this scenario your going to be in the 30 to 70 dollar range. If yo9u read the specs you will see that it list the MBS (megabytes per second). Make sure that the one that you are buying is at least 150 MBS. Another is the make sure it has the right security capabilities such as WPA WEP and many others make sure it has security enabled.

The second question is what does a Ethernet cord look like. An Ethernet cord or also known as a patch cord to tech geeks is a wire that has a multiple of wires inside that allow computers to communicate with computer language. Third question is does the length matter? The length matters only on what length of cable you need to get to your router and modem. You will experience a slow of data transfer after about 150 feet. So if your buying Ethernet cord for your home router only buy a little bit longer than what you need.

Fourth Question do you have to have your computer on to set up the network. The answer is yes, because in able to pull up the router configuration page you must have the computer on. The final question is weither all of your computers have to be on for the network to be set up. The answer is no all you have to do is connect afterward using the information that you entered in the router configuration page.

Basic Wireless Router Setup

Everywhere you go your going to interact with a Computer Network. I am going to College for Computer networking and I already have some knowledge in the Networking field. So were going to discuss simple and advance networking issues within a computer network. I’m going to start off with a hooking up and the configuration of a wireless router.

Routers tend to be pretty much plug and play. To start off you plug the router into a power supply then you take an Ethernet cord and plug it into the back of the router and your computer. Some routers have a CD that you have to install to run the configuration of the router. So if the CD is needed install it by following the on screen directions. After installing the disk or if your router did not require a disk you should be at a screen that is asking you to setup a password or an ssid. An SSID is going to be the name that is given to your router on the network. At this screen your able to assign parental guidelines such as websites that are allowed to be accessed.

After choosing your specific settings you remove the Ethernet cord from the back of your computer and connect to your modem. Your modem is your source of internet wither it is from a cable company or AT&T and Verizon you still have a modem. Now that your modem is giving an internet connection to your Router you can access the internet from wireless devices such as Smart phones, laptops, tablets and many other devices. In order you connect the wireless device to the wireless router you will be required to re enter the password into the device. After that your set to browse the web whenever you want. My next blog is going to be about setting up group policies to control user Interaction. If you have a networking problem that you would like me to discuss let me know maybe you will make the list.
